A three-year-old boy has been rescued from a filthy home after he was found naked and hiding under a bed after spending three days alone and without food.
A child has been rescued from an apartment infested with cockroaches in Odessa, Ukraine after his mum left him to go and hang out with friends for three days, according to reports.
When the little boy was found, there was no food in the house and apparently, the child had resorted to eating sugar as it was the only edible thing he could find.
A neighbour claimed that once the sugar had run out, the boy even resorted to eating the packaging.
The three-year-old was found after he flooded his neighbours’ downstairs when trying to turn on a tap and drink water.
A woman who’s apartment was damaged due to the flooding told local media: ”I saw water pouring down my walls and ran upstairs trying to find Natalia.
”When I realised [the toddler] was home alone, I called emergency services.”
In order to save the child, a crew of rescuers cut a hole in the metal front door and then entered the apartment.
The next-door neighbour said: ”The boy was found hiding under his bed and chewing a plastic bag. He was naked. His face and hands were covered with sugar.
”Police officers checked the apartment and concluded that the sugar was his only food.
“After running out of it, the boy started eating the package.”
Exhausted, the boy was immediately sent to the hospital where he was diagnosed with malnutrition.
Whilst there, the social workers surveyed the apartment and determined that the living conditions were hazardous and dangerous to the boy’s health and life.
Yulia Nikandrova, the head of the Children’s Protection Service commented: ”The child lived in horrific unsanitary conditions.
”The apartment was infested with cockroaches and contaminated with dirt and filth.
”There was no food. The boy was neglected and covered with bruises.”
The day after the boy had been rescued, his mum returned back to the apartment. She was then interrogated by police and charged with failure due to unfulfilling her parental duties.
Reportedly, social services are seeking legal action against the boy’s mother, Natalia, and believe she should be deprived of her parental rights.
Neighbours claimed that Natalia often left her son unattended and would go out drinking with friends.
Following the boy’s discharge from hospital, he will be placed in an orphanage.
