Security footage caught the moment when a group of teenagers, aged between fourteen and eighteen, attacked an elderly woman and stole her purse. The assailants targeted the 74-year-old victim because of her advanced age and knocked her to the ground during the attack that occurred in Manhattan on Thursday evening. The woman confronted the teenagers after they allegedly stole her purse, which resulted in her being sucker-punched and knocked to the floor.
The attack reportedly occurred in the East Village last Thursday at 7 pm. The woman was knocked down along East 14th Street. This incident is the latest result of the crime wave that has swept across New York and much of the rest of the country amid the economic downturn resulting from the coronavirus pandemic. Because millions of Americans are out of work and struggling to make ends meet, people are resorting to crime to put food on the table.
In particular, New York City has seen a rise in crime. Last month, the data shows there were 242 shootings. Last August, the city had just 91 shootings on record.
NYPD has shared the security footage as they hunt for the three teenagers who assaulted and robbed the elderly woman. Footage shows that the old woman tried to get her purse back from the thieves. However, the teens lash out and punch the old woman. This shocked the teens enough for them to run away from the scene without taking the purse.
Police said: “Although the victim sustained bruising and swelling to her face, and cuts and scrapes to her hands, she refused medical attention.”
The 74-year-old victim was trying to help a friend in need at the time of the robbery. She was delivering food when the teens attacked. She said she has lived in New York City since 1963. In her decades living there, she has never experienced a surge of crime like this and hopes the mayor gets the streets “cleaned up.”
The group of teen attackers includes a girl and two boys. One boy approaches the senior citizen and snatches her purse. Because the woman tries to defend herself, she approaches the robber, who then turns around and smacks his fist across her face. The punch knocks the old woman to the ground. The scared teens flee the scene, realizing that they got in over their heads. The teens were not wearing masks properly.
Compared to August 2019, robberies and assaults have increased in New York City. There was a 4.1 percent rise in robberies and a 2 percent rise in assaults year over year. Murders rose 47 percent compared to last year’s numbers.
Over the weekend, several people were murdered. One 25-year-old man was shot in the head and killed in Queens. His wife found his body and called the cops.
In unrelated incidents, another victim, 23, was shot but is expected to survive. Then, hours later, a 40-year-old man was shot in Brooklyn. He was reported to be in critical condition.
