Former POTUS Jimmy Carter and his loving wife and first lady, Rosalynn Carter have been married for 73 years. Through all their personal and public battles, the duo has now become the longest-married presidential couple. The record was previously held by the late George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush who were also married for 73 years.

When compared to other U.S. presidents and first ladies, Carter and his wife are leading a modest lifestyle. Carter and Rosalynn, according to the Washington Post, live in a farmhouse that is located in Plains, Georgia and is valued at $167,000. The publication says the estate is “less than the value of the armored Secret Service vehicles parked outside.”

Rosalynn and Jimmy first met in Plains, Georgia. The future 39th president spotted Rosalynn in their little hometown. He later told the Washington Post that he asked her out, and after their first date Jimmy told his mother he was going to marry Rosalyn. The couple was first married on July 7th, 1946, Jimmy was 21 years old while Rosalyn was only 18.

Now, 73 years later, the couple lives a simple life back in the small town where they both were born. The pair told People that their long marriage has lasted because of their shared passion for the service of others. They have built houses in Nepal and fought river blindness alongside one another with their charitable organization, The Carter Center.

Carter credits his long life to Rosalynn and Jesus telling the tabloid, “I think the best explanation for that is to marry the best spouse: someone who will take care of you and engage and do things to challenge you and keep you alive and interested in life. One of the things Jesus taught was: If you have any talents, try to utilize them for the benefit of others.”
