Five-Year-Old Boy Dies After Granite Tabletop Fell Onto His Head At Wedding Reception

A five-year-old boy has died at a wedding reception in a Chicago hotel after a granite tabletop fell on his head.

At around 10 pm last Friday, police and paramedics were called to The Drake Hotel on North York Road in Oak Brook after there were reports over an unconscious child.

By the times the first responders had arrived, the emergency room doctor who was attending the wedding celebration had started to perform CPR on the little boy.

The five-year-old has been identified as Luca Berlingerio by the DuPage County Coroner’s Office. The boy, from Glenview, was then rushed to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital where he was then pronounced dead after suffering from a traumatic head injury.

As reported by WGN, investigators said that Luca had been at the wedding reception with his parents and he had climbed onto a table which was behind a sofa. It had been set up in an open area where other children had also been sitting.

Yet as the children were getting up to leave, the five-year-old, who had been laying perpendicularly on the granite tabletop, began to start sliding off.

Although he attempted to get a grip on the edge of the table, he descended backwards and when he got down from the table it toppled over and hit him on the head which inflicted a significant injury. The police managed to review the incident on the video from the venue’s cameras.

A short while later, his family realised he was unconscious and raised the alarm. The ER doctor was summoned for help and someone called 911.

In an obituary for Luca, it stated that he had “passed away suddenly”.

Luca is survived by his parents, Simone and Anna Berlingerio, and his older brother, Rocco.

The Drake Hotel told the Daily Mail: “Our team is heartbroken about this terrible accident.

“We wish to share our condolences with the family and friends affected. To respect their privacy, we aren’t able to share the specifics of the incident.”

A friend of the family has since launched a fundraiser in the hope of receiving some donations to assist the Berlingerios’ during the tragedy.
