While at her home, 22-month-old Eve Leatherland died in the comfort of her own home. However, she did not die in peace. She had suffered similar injuries to what one might experience if in an automobile accident. However, the girl did not get into an accident. Her mother, 24-year-old Abigail Leatherland and her partner 31-year-old Tom Curd, allegedly poisoned the toddler to cover up their consistent beatings which left her skull fractured and her internal organs destroyed.
With the baby poisoned and beaten, Eve Leatherland died while her mother and Curd played video games and chatted with friends on Facebook.
Although Leatherland and Curd deny murdering the toddler, the evidence is stacked against them. She died in their home in Liskeard, Cornwall, the United Kingdom in October 2017 – and now the justice system wants to get revenge.
In court, the jury heard how badly the girl was treated. Histopathologist, Professor David Mangham told the jury that he found evidence of “at least three” attacks that caused severe harm to Eve. He described how she had suffered 12 rib fractures, two skull fractures, and even a rupture to her liver. Three of the rib fractures had happened well before the final beating because they were already healing.
As the girl was dying, Leatherland and Curd “watched TV, played video games, sent each other text messages and chatted to people on Facebook.”
Besides the horrible evidence of abuse, Eve’s autopsy revealed that she had also been poisoned with a massive dose of adult painkiller, which helped shut her system down for good.
Leatherland and Curd were both charged with charges of murder, manslaughter by gross negligence, and causing or allowing the death of a child. They claim they are innocent and pleaded not guilty.
When the case opened in court, Sean Brunton, the prosecuting attorney said: “Eve Leatherland was murdered in her own home. In the few days leading up to her death, she was assaulted on at least two occasions, possibly several more, and in the course of those assaults, she suffered a fractured skull, several fractured ribs, a split liver and numerous other injuries of varying severity.
“She suffered injuries described by medical experts as being the type of injuries most commonly associated with a road traffic crash. But, ghastly as all that may sound this was not quite the end of it. Because despite these assaults on this young child, or perhaps because of them, more was to befall young Eve. After these attacks, she was then given medication. Not medication kindly given to alleviate her suffering.”
He added, “Not a teaspoon full of Calpol to take the edge off a nasty cold or a banged knee. But rather, she was given so much medication that she was killed by it. Not a teaspoon full of Calpol to take the edge off a nasty cold or a banged knee. But rather, she was given so much medication that she was killed by it. Whether she was given the medication over a few days to try to mask the effects of these various assaults and these terrible injuries upon her, or whether she was given one massive dose in the hours shortly before she died, we cannot precisely say.”
