We are living in a world that is pretty divided at times. However, we do need to look at it with a fresh set of eyes from time to time.
Kevin Armentrout is a speaker and writer. He was in Las Vegas, waiting in an airport terminal, with his toddler and family. Carter Jean, a rambunctious little girl, was “being her usual inquisitive self” as the whole family waited in the waiting area. Carter Jean was walking around and told everyone that she met hello.
Carter Jean then walked over to Joseph Pat Wright, a tall African American man who was waiting to go home to Norman, Oklahoma. He was likely tired from being away for a business meeting and was probably eager to relax. However, he decided to talk to Carter Jean like she was a long lost friend instead!
Kevin wrote on Facebook that Joseph asked his little girl if she would like to sit with him. From there he took his tablet out and proceeded to show the little girl how to watch cartoons and draw on it. In turn, Carter Jean offered him some of her snacks. Kevin said this went on for at least 45 minutes. During that time he kept thinking that the two were different generations and races, yet acted as though they were the best of friends. He went on to say that this is the type of world he hopes for her.
Kevin could not believe that this complete stranger was fine with spending 45 minutes with a little girl he had never met before. He wanted to use it as a teachable moment, especially during a time where the country is so deeply divided by various beliefs. He wanted to publicly thank Joseph for doing what he did for her. He thanked him for showing his little girl that kind and compassionate people are still out there.
The post quickly went viral, with many people jumping in to praise Joseph. Some knew him and wrote that he is a Christian man who is always eager to treat others well. Some said he has always been amazing with young kids.
What did you think of this story? How would you have reacted if Carter Jean came up to you in an airport? Let us know in the comments and be sure to spread the word about Joseph’s kindness – hopefully it will inspire others!
