When Connie Taylor suddenly passed away, her grandsons found that they were unable to call anyone to ask for help as they couldn’t unlock her phone. Thankfully, they were able to feed, wash and dress for a week until they were discovered.
The reason the two boys were discovered was that a teacher became concerned over their prolonged absence without any explanation. It was then that the 71-year-old grandma’s body was discovered at her home in Talty, Texas, alongside her two traumatised grandsons.
Kristen Zastoupil, from Forney Independent School District, said: “They knew something was not right. They are used to communicating with this parent. And so when they didn’t get a response, they knew something was off.”
The two unidentified boys were adopted by Connie and it is believed that she died of natural causes, with an autopsy set to determine the official cause. Once the brothers were discovered, they were taken to foster care whilst relatives put in an application to have custody of them.
The police have confirmed that the boys are doing well despite the ordeal they have been through.
A family friend said that Connie acted as a doting and loving mother to the boys. Just a month prior to her death, she had adopted her grandsons from a foster home.
NBCDFW reported that no further information has been released on the brothers’ biological parents and their whereabouts.
Zastoupil said that the tragedy has highlighted how important teachers can be for their students’ welfare, even when it comes to issues outside of school.
She said: “They are always heroes in our eyes, but even more so… to have to share with them the outcome Friday was very heartbreaking and it was a really tough weekend.
“They are thinking about their students, and that’s the first thought.”
