Lopez was treated for his injuries for a few weeks before he was sent home. The family set-up a GoFundMe page to raise money for the hospital bills. “Because of his age (80 years old) and a pre-existing heart condition, his recovery will take months and possibly years,” the description of the page read. They raised $66,000 of the $70,000 they originally planned on raising. The family posted an update earlier today to announce his passing. The announcement read, “Shortly after he returned home for recovery he was readmitted due to the impact of his injuries. After a couple of weeks under the care of AV hospital, he has passed away and became our angel in Heaven.”
He is survived by his wife, three children, 16 grandchildren, and one great-grandson, reported PEOPLE. Lopez’s fourth child, a son, died on Tuesday from the COVID-19 virus, according to relatives who stated, “We believe they are peacefully in heaven together.” Cecilia Ramirez, Lopez’s daughter, stated in a news conference, “My dad didn’t deserve this. My dad was a good man doing what everybody does every day.” She added, “My dad was a giving, kind-hearted man and would never hurt anybody.” Christopher Ramirez, Lopez’s grandson said, “My grandfather was a loving man. He believed in family values, hard work, and had a strong faith.”
After the incident took place, the suspect was identified as 22-year-old Damaris Wade. The family of the deceased called for justice in this case. According to NBC Los Angeles, Wade surrendered to authorities days after the attack. Investigators had circulated photos of him and his girlfriend walking out of the grocery store. The woman was also initially charged with being an accessory to the crime. These charges against her were later dropped. Wade, on the other hand, was charged with attempted murder, elder abuse with infliction of injury, and second-degree robbery. He also has a prior conviction for robbery in 2016.

We want this whole entire thing, for the guy that did this to my dad — for him to get it for manslaughter, and to get charges for manslaughter and murder, because of my dad’s death. He killed my dad,” the victim’s son, Fransisco said, breaking down in tears, reported KTLA 5. And we will support the LAPD, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to make sure that you are brought to justice if you are hurting any human being and you leave them for dead.”
