Lopez was treated for his injuries for a few weeks before he was sent home. The family set-up a GoFundMe page to raise money for the hospital bills. “Because of his age (80 years old) and a pre-existing heart condition, his recovery will take months and possibly years,” the description of the page read. They raised $66,000 of the $70,000 they originally planned on raising. The family posted an update earlier today to announce his passing. The announcement read, “Shortly after he returned home for recovery he was readmitted due to the impact of his injuries. After a couple of weeks under the care of AV hospital, he has passed away and became our angel in Heaven.”

We want this whole entire thing, for the guy that did this to my dad — for him to get it for manslaughter, and to get charges for manslaughter and murder, because of my dad’s death. He killed my dad,” the victim’s son, Fransisco said, breaking down in tears, reported KTLA 5. The charges leveled initially were – upgrading following the death of Lopez. “My mom is struggling with the death of her son, our brother. We just made arrangements for my brother to be buried next Tuesday. And now we’re going to go back and make arrangements for my father,” Cecilia Ramirez said.

Miguel S. Coronado, a spokesman for the family who is also an educator and civil rights activist, demanded the full extent of the law be used in prosecuting the perpetrator to highlight violent acts cannot be tolerated. “We condemn this violence,” Coronado said holding up a picture of a bloodied Lopez in the hospital. “This will not be tolerated. We’re angry. We’re hurt. We’re upset. And we’re calling on anybody that is doing this against our people, or any people for that matter, that you will be caught. And you’ll be prosecuted. And we will support the LAPD, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to make sure that you are brought to justice if you are hurting any human being and you leave them for dead.”
